CAN – connecting nodes

OpenLCB/LCC uses CAT5 cables to connect nodes together. CAT5 cables are normally used to connect Ethernet, but each cable contains 8 wires. Two of these are used to carry the CAN data, four are used to carry power, and the last two are reserved for future use. The cables have a RJ45 connector on each end.

While you can make your own cables by buying CAT wire and installing the ends, it is much easier to buy CAT5 patch cords or cables. These are ubiquitously available and relatively inexpensive.
